Cascara Sagrada
Cascara is an excellent herb to help kick start the cleansing process, for those with very sluggish digestive systems. It is specific for chronic constipation and can be used initially to regulate and cleanse the bowel, while the underlying problem is addressed. Measures such as dietary changes, increased fluids, exercise , and soluble fibres, such as Psyllium help conduct this. Cascara achieves it’s action by stimulating peristalsis, which is the muscular activity of the colon, via stimulation of the nerve centre in the lower part of the intestine and the intestinal wall. This is achieved due to it’s active properties of anthraquinone glycosides, which cause the stimulating laxative action. These are milder and gentler than some harsher laxatives.
Cascara also contains bitter principles, which help stimulate the whole digestive system. It is useful for the liver, decreases intestinal gas and helps chronic indigestion and parasitic infections.

Senna
Extracted from dried fruit pods, senna is one of the most effective herbs for getting a sluggish digestive system moving effectively. This is especially useful for someone who suffers from constipation or a very slow bowel.

Aloe Vera
Aloe has been used in healing, both internally and externally since the dawn of history. It has long been revered for it’s detoxifying and cleansing properties. It is a laxative, while being soothing and healing to damaged tissues.

Psyllium powder
Psyllium contains a high mucilage content that when exposed to water, swells and becomes gel like. This provides a gentle form of dietary fibre to push wastes and toxins through the intestines for effective elimination. It therefore has excellent detoxifying properties, but is non irritating for the colon.

Psyllium is useful for both diarrhoea and constipation, as it absorbs excess fluid, provides bulk and normalises the bowels action. Psyllium not only helps eliminate toxins and wastes, but studies have also shown excellent results with cholesterol problems. This seems to be due to the type of soluble fibre found in Psyllium, which binds tightly to excess cholesterol and carries it out of the body.

Rhubarb Root
Very useful as a tonic, it invigorates the powers of digestion. It is internally healing and will act as a mild laxative, but is also useful for diarrhoea, as it is astringent.

Burdock Root
An alternative in action, it helps move the body to a better state of health. It has a cleansing effect on the tissues, and helps skin conditions such as eczema, acne, boils (often a result of overloaded lymph). Burdock acts as a blood purifier, and is cleansing for the liver and kidneys.

Licorice
Licorice is an extremely beneficial healing herb. It’s primary uses today include respiratory problems, genito-urinary complaints, for the gastro-intestinal tract and as a anti-inflammatory. Licorice also acts as a mild and gentle laxative.
